Infernal Beauty

You raised from the shadows to glow in sunlight,
Your captivating beauty and your sweet scent wrap around me
and I shall die by your infernal kiss.

You might have seen her often, perceived her scent in summer, and been captivated by her bundles of petals that glitter in the sunlight.
But you don't expect the infernal effect she takes on you when she finally captured you enough to indulge in her beauty.

This is an interpretation of the blossoms of Brugmansia, a plant that belongs to the family of Solanaceae.
Its content of toxic alkaloids can cause hallucinations, dowsiness, numbness and if dosed too high it can ultimately cause death.
Since it's a natural drug you have no power over the dosage because every plant contains a different amount of toxic agents that can cause fascinating trips and hallucinations. So you might experience either the full beauty of the plant or total decay.

The trips are often described as incalculable, terriffic and very confusing. The danger of the drug and its effect is also that consuments are not able to differ reality from hallucination. So, if you believe you have wings, you will definitely jump off the next bridge.

I wanted to interpret this pretty yet lethal flower because I find it captivating as well as scary. And I tell you, keep your fingers off this plant. My description is merely to clear up the ambiguity of this painting and to point out the symbolism, not to suggest a new drug to you.

Better stick to beer or mushrooms.

This painting took me a very long time sitting on the floor, mixing subtle colours and detailing the flowers. I rarely draw flowers this up close and therefore I think this was another leaning curve for me.

The original is 61 x 49 cm on thick watercolour stock and will be adorned with an old frame tomorrow.
