This is normally something I would keep in my personal thoughts because I love this page and this community for it has always been around me and helped me come to where I am now. But I've been somewhat oblivious to the changes due to my graphic novel project and my absence.

Whenever I stumble across the front pages of DeviantArt, I'm being slammed in the face by pictures that have a quality of MySpace selfies and free porn websites and sometimes stolen artwork squeezed inbetween all of that mess. Deviants' usage behaviour seemed to have changed as well in a way. The page, to me, appear desolate or ebbing off.
I remember the time when I took a glimpse on DA's browsing pages and saw amazing pieces of artwork battling themselves across the rankings on the site. It was an astonishing conglomerate of highly inspiring and vastly coloured original art. And this isn't only the popular section I am talking about here now. I mean everything from forums to newly submitted works too. People who looked upon the pictures seemed to invest more time and dedication to the pieces as well. The page was sparking with life! It has a momentum that was remarkable for this page and I felt proud and happy to have been a part of it all.

Now my question here is, since I don't want to judge any of the people who upload certain images, if I am wrong about this. How do you feel? Has the quality of the page changed or has it even become too cumbersome for users? Has DeviantArt changed in a way that makes people go somewhere else or has the interest in art shifted? Naturally, things trend and come to an end sometimes. And many people rely on quicker and easier to access ways for social communication and art sharing.

It's difficult to open up for such a dialogue without appearing judgmental.
I personally feel happy about being here and seeing you around, commenting on my pictures and giving me so much joy and courage to keep on going. I will also continue sharing my art with you here and so should you to keep this page alive and going, should my concerns be of some truth.

Anyway, stay awesome and be creative! :)

I share the same thoughts and feelings. DA became a mess sometimes before the big website layout changes and as a icing on a toxic cake was the idiotic logo change which isn't even an original work which many people by now know. So since then I just didn't care anymore because I knew from then that the DA is dead. So many toxic accounts and messed up pages it's insane. Don't get me wrong tho you can pretty much see it even on my page too, my submissions are a mess as well. Tons of people I knew and interacted with are long gone and I ask my self sometimes what the hell am I still doing here. There are still great artists here to follow but it's overshadowed with garbage, things that shouldn't really be on here.

Hmm I agree the da landscape has changed. I once had a Myspace (for rp but it died so I closed it) alot of the postings are like what you would see on Myspace (like "oh my new sweater") others yeah ah let's say adult none cosplay pictures. I do understand if it's a cosplay and the char would do it but eh if it was me I'll keep it elsewhere. Though I dont judge.

From what I read from other journals like this, what DA displays when you look at the front page is based on which keywords are most searched.  That says a lot on its own. =/

Hello, I´m quite new here and -first of all - sorry to hear that :o I saw some .. yeah.. you know - deviations and though - ok whatever people like - but it´s really the amount of stuff - which really noone should see xD at least here.. some kids use this page too and there is a function to set your stuff as "nsfw or mature content" - which is awesome imo but not very common ^^ most people show themself naked and want something in reward - I just look at things I like and try to ignore the other stuff - vuuut I have to be honest - most of my deviations were pretty low quality too - I try to change and learn and improve - that´s a way I have to go now (I´m not a perfectionist xD) - your work is absolutely awesome - I´d like to reach that level once - but all with time.. I wish you a nice day - and greets from austria!

In fact, I have shared the same feelings for quite some time know except that since I am new to the website, I thought that's how things worked around here for a while. And frankly, I was a bit disappointed ...
I am glad to see that there are some artists out there that still value art, the real one, and are speaking up for it.

I've noticed. I've gone on and off of DeviantArt and at the beginning, it was real art. Now, people post naked photos under the hashtag 'references' or just those types of photos in general.

There's still amazing pieces of art out there, but I don't think DeviantArt will die. Just my thoughts :)

Well I'm pretty new... I think it's been 6 months since I've joined...
When I look at the undiscovered section I see pictures of barbie dolls, selfies, screenshots and all that junk.
I like to see people's artwork... Not pictures of barbie dolls' faces. Since I'm not an amazing artist (I'm just a wannabe artist really.) I look to other people's art for inspiration.

I definitely agree. What I did saw today here, when drinking my morning tee, I had to say its seems to be "that" kind of day on Deviant. Would not want to see those kind of things. I can understand erotic art it has been art form from when earth was born, but these selfie porn/naked thing types I dont understand ..why, oh why? Is there other meaning on these..and that "other" worries. Is Deviant too open on that kind of things?
Or should I understand better this new internet time that this would be a new modern art form? Is a selfie..eny kind selfie, a new art form? Am I just "that" old ? :D

DA is kind of old comparing to new (and better) websites and while it does have lot of artists and art, that inevitably brings all sorts of other people as well. I miss old DA as well, but it has more to do with type of crowd that frequents this site.
I wish DA would go with the times and provide some good Feedback or critique options. I really like the way Newgrounds has resolved their quality control and Feedback issue, albeit it might be too late to implement that in DA as well. Great topic BTW.

I feel its changed a lot. It feels more.... dead, certainly. In fact I've seen this journal pop up a few times over the past two years.
All my watchers have migrated so I mostly use ArtStation for my finished pieces and Tumblr/Facebook for the WIPs (linked to, never upload my art to Facebook directly). I do find DeviantArt very cumbersome in comparison and their attempts to modernize have been clumsy.

I think the MLP surge was the start of the quality shift for me. I couldn't be classed as a prude but a lot more crass stuff became more prevalent which I think bought down the rest of the site (once witnessed some role-playing in the comments section). There are also a load of bases clogging up the front page.
I feel DeviantArt lacks legitimacy which puts off the professional artists. I know when I went to university it wasn't one of the recommended websites to have our portfolios though I know that amazing artists started off here.

Also DA needs a spoiler tag that blurs the image and to not be so 'new features but only for premium members!" I know they need to make money but I feel some of the features that are premium (like polls and critique for example) shouldn't really be.

Anyway that's my two cents. I'll still pop in now and again though because there's still artists like you on here.

*sigh* I have to agree. RIP good old dA. ;^;
I've been here for 12 years and seen dA change so much. It's hard to get inspired here anymore and it used to be a place for me to look
for inspiring art and artists, someone to look up to and make me want to do better. But then again, as an oldest art site I've ever been on it's hard to leave.
It would be great if there would be better site for artists... Tumblr doesn't seem to be good for it, eventhough I see lots of art there. Twitter isn't either.
Having your own website is fine, but not so nice if you look for community, talking to people and chance share your art with them...

So many artists have left this site but I'm happy there still are talented artists around here, like you! Good luck with the project you have. It looks stunning!

Thus the reason I stay well away from DA's front page.  I find new art and artists by browsing the groups I am in or searching subjects that interest me.  It's a lot safer than poking the viper's nest of porn, bad selfies, and stolen art that has become the front page.

I can totally see where you're coming from. I first joined deviantart about 5 years ago, took a few years break and noticed the difference upon my return. I love all the new features that have been added on the site over the years but it's becoming more like a social network full of lazy quick snaps, selfies, stolen art and youth art that quite frankly isn't at a standard in my opinion to be on this site. And let's not forget the profusion of nudes. I hate having the mature filter on, but like most others, I assume, I'm not here to look at a bunch of naked people, I want to see some art!

I think the issue lies in the diversity and subjectivity of 'art'. You can tell the 12-year-old recolourers and the happy-snappers that what they're doing isn't at a standard for the site, but they can easily just tell you that art is subjective and that's just your opinion. And you can tell the nude photographers that what they're providing isn't art, but by definition most any creation can be termed art. Without clear regulations, it's hard to discourage people from posting much anything here.

I have to agree,to be honest.Ive only been here a little less than a year, and i can see stuff changing. While i typically have the 'mature content' filter on(i dont wanna see that shit, man) what i usually encounter is a bunch of shitty pixelated artwork that,im sorry, barely counts as art,to be honest. That or people using it as a self promoting social media, where its all about THEM and THEIR OCs and THEIR life and a bunch of other bullshit that,to be honest,no one else cares about!
And thats only half of it.
If you ever click on the 'Random Deviant' button, you'll see that most of the Deviant pages have been vacant for 6 months to 6-10 years. That or they haven't posted ANYTHING except statuses.

So please-if you're a member of this site and have no artistic talent(or literary-my best friend writes great poetry, but can barely use a crayon)

There were no significant changes in my circles of communication, but about 3 months ago deviantart was added in register of banned sites in Russia, for the vulgar images/drawings with children and for instructions "how to cut the veins", lol.

It's all very sad, I have to use a proxy, because my ISP banned this site, but I still think that deviantart is the wonderful place for wonderful drawings and people ^.^

I wouldn't necessarily say the issue was in taking photos and calling it art as there are many amazing photographers out there, the issue is more to do with those that put no thought or effort into what they're doing and it's also about what they take photos off.

I have been absent from DA for a while now and have come to notice the same thing.

Personally I blame the app. It makes it easy for anyone to upload from anywhere, and while it seems like a good thing the problem comes in with the consent of : with all the new users, all the trend following monkeys also gets a shot at the front page with a quick picture taken and edit it with a pone. and even worse people don't put the same attention ore work into the submissions, and anything goes. Call me old fashion, but to take a picture you need a actual camera.

Also the next selfie stick I see I'll snap and "stick" it up somewhere else

It wouldn't so bad if you could black list people  you don't want to see their art. When looking for inspiration for Dnd characters, sometimes its pretty hard going through 30 single images of that one poser smut scenerio because one of the characters is a knight, with five variations of armor color.

I've been here for... a really long time LOL and I've noticed the same thing. I never look at the front page anymore for that reason; I've long since changed my dA favorite from the home page to just my notifications. I don't think I look at the home page but once every few months, when I'm forced to log in somewhere that I've never logged in before, or going on to show a friend (and I try to skip it as quickly as possible just in case something... unsavory pops up).

It's so, so sad. Really, the home page used to have such beautiful art and now - now it just doesn't. Too many people are trying to make dA the new Facebook, or Myspace, and it's sad. I can't even go welcome new deviants anymore without cringing at the stolen art from half of them.

It's troublesome owing to the sheer volume of artwork that now exists on the site.  Too many things to look at, which make the site overwhelming, and many of them are not necessarily worthy of such high praise. Deviantart also created a new way to view galleries in which every bit of a person's work is displayed tumblr style.  It is visually overstimulating and makes it difficult for me to withstand and to concentrate on appreciating one single work.  It is becoming irritating for me.

It is also a shame because the work promoted on DA these days is generally that belonging to incredibly popular artists.  While some of the work may deserve a great deal of merit, I believe it undermines the work and dedication a lot of lesser-known artists put into their body of work.

People have left for newer things with better display algorithms. DeviantART kept changing its layout and function for the sake of modernity over actual use, prioritizing new ideas for the sake of what people were comfortable with. Some changes we got used to, others were utterly awful - and they lost more and more users with each change.

I think the recent trend of showing generally less professional and lower quality artworks is to do with them trying to push the artists who are less known. While it's okay in theory, what they don't know is that a lot of the less-known art submitters are in fact those who put stolen works, memes, traced art, and generally people who post niche stuff such as fetish work. Because of that, professionals who previously used to be popular, now no longer show up on front page; while maybe some might say they don't need more attention than they already have, I know that professionals depend on that popularity and attention, and cutting it off, cuts off a great deal of exposure and potential income. dA focused on 'rising star' ideals rather than keeping up those who have spent years getting to the stage they have, and it ostracized many of them.

Core was also a big cause for decline - the cost for a dA subscription has doubled from what it used to be a couple of years ago and with fewer options (so if you want to change your UN, you have to get 3 or 6 months instead of 1), they're making a push to stop adblockers, and all of this points to the fact that this site is definitely not the active place it used to be. They're trying too hard to sustain their userbase, which started being pushed away around the time they implemented Points. I've seen it happen in a range of groups on here, the last-minute burst of activity to make it seem like they're still appealing, still alive, when people are already losing interest and dispersing for bigger and better things.

Tumblr and now Twitter are making a rise, and Artstation is a far more professional place that actually functions as a place to find employment in the art field (though half the time their popular/trending page is just Titties, which is.. no)

dA was alright in its golden years, but they're struggling to keep up, and their reputation has become basically a 'lol XD random' teenage userbase (which is now also moving to tumblr). Sign of the times, I suppose.

Long term deviant here (since 2009 or something). In light of most of what I've read below, I'd have to say you're partly correct. I for one still discover and follow a lot of amazing artists here on dA (you among them). The "more like this" and "more from this artist" buttons have always worked well for me, and I occasionally discover other artists by browsing the favourites section of my favourite artists. Also, if you use the mature filter and search functions correctly, you mostly find exactly what you want to see.

That said, there are a few problems. The main page is mostly dead, not exactly sure what changed but keep in mind that the "most popular" section shows what people are most interested in. So if there's too much porn there it might be more of a problem with the community and less dA itself. Not that there's anything wrong with fetish art in my opinion, there are quite a few very talented people in that genre. It's the low quality, low effort shock value images that bother me, personally. Another problem is the site redesign, for example DDs are no longer shown at the bottom of the message center, and as such have pretty much lost their purpose for me. I used to discover whole new genres of art by clicking on a DD thumbnail that caught my interest, and browsing from there.

So yeah, things have changed, kinda. I wouldn't declare the site dead just yet though.

Edit: Huh, maybe you need to go over your mature filter settings. Just went to the front page out of curiousity (haven't actually been there in a while), and haven't seen a single nude or fetish piece in the first few pages of "what's hot", "daily deviations" or "popular 24h". There are a few comics and humorous pics, but nothing I'd call the MySpace selfie kind of bad. I've even discovered two amazing artists (link, link) that will most likely join my watchlist. So, all in all... I really don't see what's so bad.
